Bone Grafts & Ridge Augmentation / Preservation

Bone Grafting

Bone Grafts and Ridge Augmentation / Preservation Staten Island - peridontal treatment of gum diseases, including periodontitis.

Bone Grafting is used to prepare a site for dental implants that are needed to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Bone Grafting can also be used to save teeth that have experienced bone loss resulting from gum disease.

Ridge Preservation & Augmentation

Ridge augemntation corrects depressions in your gum line that are unnatural looking and sometimes make you seem older than you realy are.

Ridge preservation is used to prevent the jawbone from collapsing following tooth extraction, and helps to even out replacement teeth that may seem too long compared to adjacent teeth. When a tooth needs to be extracted or pulled, ridge preservation is recommended for temporary stabilization and preservation of the existing bone in that area. If this is not done at the time that the tooth is removed, future placement of dental implants or bridges can be more expensive, invasive, time consuming and uncomfortable.

What causes bone loss?

Bone loss can be caused by:

  • The loss of a tooth – in an area where teeth are missing, bone naturally shrinks or resorbs over time, both in height and width. Teeth can be lost for a variety of reasons:
    • Irreparable tooth decay
    • A cracked or broken tooth
    • A reinfected root canal
    • Advanced gum disease resulting in bone loss
  • Localized infection
  • Gum disease
  • Trauma

The risk of bone loss can be reduced by replacing lost teeth quickly, before significant bone loss occurs. If you’re not ready for dental implants at the time that your teeth are lost or removed, a ridge preservation procedure can maintain the bone in that area until your implants can be placed.

New bone can be grafted to create a secure site for placing implants and to achieve aesthetic results. For years, the bone needed for a bone grafting procedure had to be taken from another part of your jaw or body, requiring additional surgery. Today, bone grafting materials derived from donor tissue may be used in place of your own bone, with no additional surgery required. During the healing process the graft material is intended to act as a scaffold and be replaced by your own new bone.

Benefits

What are the benefits of bone grafts?

Bone grafting is a process that assists your body in regenerating lost bone. Over time, techniques and materials have steadily improved, limiting the need to use bone taken from another part of your body.

  • Growth of new bone to restore lost bone
  • Creation of a suitable environment for implant placement

What are the benefits of ridge preservation?

Techniques and materials for ridge preservation and augmentation have steadily improved over time, making it the most conservative bone grafting procedure available.

  • Minimally invasive with minimal discomfort
  • Preparation for future implant or bridge placement without additional grafting
  • Creation of a suitable environment for implant placement
  • More cost effective and less painful than delaying the grafting procedure
  • Preservation of a natural-looking smile
